How to calculate how much mulch you need

Bed area multiplied by the depth in feet gives cubic feet. Dividing that by 27 gives cubic yards. A front border of 20 by 10 ft finished at 3 in covers 200 sq ft, works out at 50 cubic feet and lands on 1.85 cubic yards. Bagged in the standard 2 cu ft size that same border takes 25 bags.

A circular tree ring runs through the same two steps once the diameter is halved and the area comes from pi times the radius squared. Beds of the same size get multiplied by the count, up to 100 of them.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard holds 27 cubic feet, which divides into 13.5 bags of the standard 2 cu ft bark size and 33.75 of the 0.8 cu ft rubber format. Stores sell whole bags, so a yard bought bagged comes to 14 on the receipt and a spare one left in the garage. That double unit is why the mulch calculator leads on yards and keeps the cubic feet beside them, one being how a supplier quotes over the phone and the other being what is printed on the bag.

Mulch coverage by bed area at 3 in

One cubic yard spread 3 in thick covers 108 sq ft, stretches to 162 sq ft at 2 in and drops to 81 sq ft at 4 in. Coverage halves between those two depths, which is how an extra inch of depth moves the order further than an extra foot of border.

A 2 cu ft bag covers 8 sq ft at 3 in, 12 sq ft at 2 in and 6 sq ft at 4 in, while the 0.8 cu ft rubber format covers 3.2 sq ft at the same 3 in. A mulch coverage calculator runs a measured bed against those figures and rounds the count up to the whole bag.

How deep should mulch be?

2 to 3 in maintains a bed that is already weeded, thick enough to hold moisture without burying the crowns of low plants, while 3 to 4 in is the range that keeps weed seedlings from reaching light. Under 2 in the layer washes into the lawn after a couple of storms and the bed looks bare by midsummer.

Past 4 in the layer traps damp against stems and starves the surface roots of oxygen, so deeper is not safer. The extreme version has a name in the trade, the mulch volcano, meaning the cone heaped against a trunk that rots the bark underneath over a few seasons. Topping up 1 in each spring holds a bed inside the 2 in to 4 in window more reliably than one deep load every third year.

When bulk mulch beats bags at 3 cubic yards

3 cubic yards is the line the calculator draws between the two ways of buying. That volume comes to 81 cubic feet and turns into 41 bags of 2 cu ft to lift into a trunk, cut open, empty and flatten, against one tipped load and a wheelbarrow. At the 3 in working depth it answers to a bed of 324 sq ft, an 18 by 18 ft square.

Suppliers load in half-yard steps, which is why the bulk figure is rounded up to the next half yard instead of printed as a decimal. That 1.85 yd³ border therefore goes on the order sheet as 2 yd³. The surplus tends to disappear into the low spots as the pile is raked out.

Rubber mulch and the smaller 0.8 cu ft bag

Rubber mulch, meaning shredded tire crumb rather than bark, ships in 0.8 cu ft bags because a 2 cu ft sack of the stuff would be too heavy to carry from the aisle to the car. Setting the bag size to 0.8 turns this into a rubber mulch calculator, same volume math and a bag count that climbs, one cubic yard taking 34 bags where bark takes 14.

The depth guidance stays calibrated on planting beds. Play surfaces are commonly built to 6 in for fall protection, which trips a warning written for living roots, while the 2 in to 4 in window holds for rubber the same way it holds for bark around shrubs and along borders.

Rubber does not break down into the soil the way bark does, so the 1 in top-up a bark bed takes each spring turns into an occasional repair here.
